We all want our furry companions to live with us as long as they can, feeling and living their best. Nutrition is a key part of keeping our beloveds healthy and active, which improves their moods and ours, too.
What Makes Up A “Good” Diet?
No matter the age of your furry friend, a poor diet can lead to obesity, a weak immune system, diabetes, pancreatitis, allergies and dental urinary tract problems, to name only a few ailments.
To avoid those illnesses, it is critical that our pets get all the important nutrients. Like us, they get their nutritional building blocks from food.
Here are a few diet must-haves:
Feed them good sources of 12 essential minerals: Calcium, Magnesium, Sulfur, Iron, Iodine, Zinc, Selenium and Copper
Make sure their foods are made up of at least 10% protein and 50% carbs
Meat is an excellent source of proteins and fatty acids. A well-rounded, high-quality pet food will usually have a superior ingredient list, containing real meat as the primary ingredient
Such foods also have a minimal number of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. The best options have none of those additives
Consider veggies and fruits, which are also good sources of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber
We know you want to give your friend the best foods possible. Remember, their nutritional needs and diet should be tailored to keep your pet healthy and thriving:
Their meals should be made with the best ingredients and as “clean” as it can be (no additives or preservatives is best)
“Toppers” – or added foods sprinkled in their meals- help improve your pet’s protein intake
Avoid table scraps! These can lead to bad eating habits and poor nutrition
No raw food: bacteria thrive on uncooked, room temperature meats, which upsets their digestive system
Healthy treats and chews add calories to your pet’s diet and should never make up more than about 10 percent of their daily caloric intake.
Our menu offers many of these suggestions, as well as provide healthy, fun options that your pet will enjoy.
